Two very good reasons to set a very unreasonable alarm.
Typical size. Entirely unreasonable presence. These are the fish that make a perfectly grown adult forget all their words.

The approach: slow-trolled live bait. That second, often-overlooked summer run deserves a circle on your calendar.
Enormous schools. Surface feeding frenzies. Water that suddenly looks like someone dropped a washing machine into it.

The approach: popper fishing. Cast a big wooden or plastic lure into the froth. Then hold on. Yes, with both hands.

Inshore is cheaper, shorter and still excellent. Work the rocky headlands of Isla Parida and the mainland coast for cubera snapper and roosterfish, year-round. Speed jigging and live-bait slow trolling keep things interesting.

The other thing that’s biting
Chitras — sandflies — bite at dawn and dusk in still air. Which is, conveniently for them, exactly when you’re standing around loading the boat.
Wear socks and closed shoes, use DEET or picaridin, and stay in the breeze. Your ankles did not sign up to be the bait.
