01 / The whole trip, in one breath
Fly to David.
Drive to the breeze.
The simplest arrival for many international visitors is Panama City → David → Boca Chica. Most arrive in Panama at Tocumen International Airport (PTY). Continue on a domestic flight to David (DAV), then allow 1–1.5 hours for the roughly 65 km road journey to Boca Chica by rental car or independently arranged private transfer.

Driving all the way from Panama City? Allow approximately 6–7 hours, plus longer breaks, traffic and delays. Flying domestically is usually the easier choice after a long international journey if the connection works and the fare fits your budget. A flight’s airtime is only one part of the day.
You arrive by road. Boca Chica is a mainland village. No boat is needed to reach BREEZE. Boats come later, if you choose an independent island outing in the gulf.
The Panama Tourism getting-there guide confirms the road or David-flight approach and notes that local bus services are limited.
02 / Three letters that really matter
Same city.
Different airports.
The easiest mistake happens before you see a palm tree: PTY and PAC are different airports. Read the airport code on each ticket before booking your connection.
Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Panama City’s main international arrival airport. If your next flight leaves from PAC, collect your bags and allow for a road transfer across the city.
Albrook Marcos A. Gelabert Airport (PAC)
The Panama City airport used by Air Panama for its David route. “Albrook airport” and the Albrook bus terminal are separate destinations, too.
Air Panama: Albrook (PAC) → David (DAV)
Air Panama flies to Enrique Malek International Airport (DAV) in David, with roughly twice-daily service as a planning guide. The short flight is commonly described as 45–55 minutes. The airline’s published timetable contains both 45-minute and one-hour timings and different operating days, so use your date’s booking details for the actual departure and arrival.
Check Air Panama’s published schedule and confirm your date directly with the airline. The frequency and duration above are estimates, not a promise of two flights every day.
Give your connection some breathing room
The transfer is part of the trip.
Allow for immigration at PTY, checked bags, the journey to PAC, and the domestic airline’s check-in deadline. City traffic and a late international arrival can undo a tight connection. Ask the airline what is realistic for your tickets; if the gap is too short, spend a night in Panama City.
Compare baggage allowances before paying, especially with fishing gear or larger bags. If another itinerary offers a David flight from PTY, check its airport code and connection terms directly; you only need the PAC transfer when your ticket actually departs from PAC.
After landing in David, your trip becomes pleasantly straightforward: collect your bags, pick up your car or meet your driver, stop for cash, and head toward the coast. Send your accommodation your expected arrival time once you know it.
About 65 km. Allow 1–1.5 hours by car or private transfer. Your starting point in David, stops and road conditions affect the total. This is a driving estimate; buses take longer.
Driving yourself
Leave David on the Pan-American Highway heading east, toward Panama City. Take the junction for Horconcitos and Boca Chica, then follow the five illustrated steps above. Save the route and your accommodation’s pin while you have a connection.
A car gives you flexibility for day trips around Chiriquí. An SUV is wise if you plan to continue into the highlands, especially for rough access roads. Ask about the actual roads on your itinerary; the main village approach alone is not a reason to assume you need a 4×4.
Taking a private transfer
Arrange a driver in advance and share your flight number, arrival date, passenger count, luggage and exact drop-off pin. Confirm where to meet, the complete fare, any waiting terms and whether a cash stop is included.
Get a quote from an independent provider. There is no transfer price promised by this guide, and a room booking is not a confirmed pickup. Contact BREEZE on WhatsApp for your accommodation arrival details.
Cash first.
Coconut thoughts later.
There are no ATMs in Boca Chica. Get cash in David before you drive. Bring small notes for local transport, meals and independently arranged outings. Confirm card payments in advance rather than making a return trip to David your first activity.
Driving all the way from Panama City instead?
Follow the Pan-American Highway west toward Chiriquí. Plan around 6–7 hours to Boca Chica, with extra time for traffic, rain, food and rest stops. You turn off for Horconcitos before reaching David, so do not drive to David simply because the flight-and-transfer itinerary starts there.
From this westbound approach, Super Centro Isabel is on the right at the junction. Take the permitted route off the highway toward Horconcitos, then use the same five-step strip. If you are bypassing David, withdraw cash earlier in a larger town before the final rural stretch.
04 / Small fares. A longer day.
Yes, there are buses.
Bring a little patience.
Public “chicken buses” and local minibuses are an option for a smaller transport budget. Expect several changes and a much longer journey than the car times on this page. Connections and waiting time are the catch.
- From Panama City, start at Albrook bus terminal. Ask about the current service toward David and the connection for Boca Chica. A through-bus stopping on the highway does not necessarily continue into the village.
- In David, confirm the whole route at the terminal. Ask for Boca Chica via the Horconcitos junction. Confirm which bus to board, exactly where to change, whether it goes through Horconcitos, and the final onward service into Boca Chica. Services can differ; do not assume every stage runs all day.
- Know how the last leg works before the first one leaves. Ask when the last village connection departs, where it waits and how you will get back. If it has finished, independently arranged onward transport or an overnight stop may be necessary.
- Carry small cash and keep the day flexible. Confirm each fare locally. Avoid combining multiple buses with a fixed boat departure or a tight flight connection. A missed minibus should not also become a missed holiday.
A little Spanish for your pocket
“Voy a Boca Chica, Chiriquí, por Horconcitos. ¿Dónde cambio de bus?”“I’m going to Boca Chica, Chiriquí, via Horconcitos. Where do I change buses?”
This is a route-planning outline, not a fixed bus timetable. Ask locally on your travel day and keep a backup for the final leg. For a late flight arrival with luggage, a prearranged transfer may be worth the extra spend.
05 / Do these before the signal gets a vote
Arrive with the
boring bits sorted.
- Save the right destination.Use “Boca Chica, Chiriquí, Panama” in your map app. It is different from Bocas del Toro and Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic.
- Download your map.Save the area for offline use and keep these five steps available. A screenshot or printout is a perfectly respectable navigation assistant.
- Get your actual arrival pin.Ask BREEZE on WhatsApp for the hostal’s location and arrival instructions. A village pin and a boat dock are not your room.
- Share your arrival time.Confirm check-in arrangements for your stay, especially after a late flight or bus delay. Send an update if your plans change.
- Cash, water, a small snack.Withdraw in David and buy your road essentials before the final stretch. If you drive from Panama City and bypass David, get cash earlier.
- Give yourself daylight. For a first drive, daylight makes the landmarks easier to recognise. Leave extra time for rain, stops and the unfamiliar junctions.
Arriving for a boat trip?
Confirm the exact departure dock with your independent operator. A tour pickup, a hotel check-in and a village arrival are three separate arrangements. If your boat leaves early, sleep in Boca Chica the night before. Read our fishing guide or whale-watching guide while planning your dates.

These distances start in Boca Chica. Times are approximate, one way by car, with extra time needed for stops or delays. A day trip needs room for the drive home as well.
| Destination | Road distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| David | ~65 km | 1–1.5 hrs |
| Boquete | 103–109 km | 2–2.5 hrs |
| Los Cangilones de Gualaca | ~80 km | ~1.5 hrs |
Coffee in Boquete, a canyon in Gualaca
Boquete works as a highland stop for coffee or a forest walk. Allow extra driving beyond town for individual farms and trailheads. An SUV is a sensible choice when your itinerary includes rough highland access roads; check with the place you are visiting.
Los Cangilones de Gualaca is a river-canyon outing. Check water conditions before swimming, particularly after rain. For either destination, choose one main activity and leave breathing room. Our things-to-do guide helps you build the day.
Flying home from David?
Add the drive, any car-return time and the airline’s required airport arrival time. The 1–1.5-hour road estimate is not a check-in buffer. For a very early departure, compare leaving Boca Chica early with staying in David the previous night.
07 / You found the village. Here’s the little base.
Save on the room.
Keep the gulf.
You do not need a resort stay to explore the Gulf of Chiriquí Marine National Park. Arrive in Boca Chica, settle into a simple room, and arrange your island day with an independent provider. Your bed does not need a private archipelago attached.
Small hostal.
Good basics.
BREEZE is a small budget hostal with air conditioning, a private bathroom, and rooms with one double bed and one single bed. We have no restaurant, no pool and no spa, and we run no boats or tours. A cool room, a place to rinse off, and a warm hello. Simple is rather nice after a travel day.

Still finding your feet?
How do you get to Boca Chica from Panama City?
Fly to David, then travel about 65 km to Boca Chica by car or private transfer, allowing 1–1.5 hours for the road leg. Air Panama departs from Albrook Marcos A. Gelabert Airport (PAC), so an international arrival at Tocumen (PTY) needs a transfer between airports. Driving all the way from Panama City takes approximately 6–7 hours before longer stops or delays.
Which airport is closest to Boca Chica, Panama?
Enrique Malek International Airport (DAV) in David is the practical airport for Boca Chica. It is about 65 km away by road; allow 1–1.5 hours by car or private transfer. Arrange the onward journey before landing.
Are Tocumen (PTY) and Albrook (PAC) the same airport?
No. Tocumen International Airport (PTY) and Albrook Marcos A. Gelabert Airport (PAC) are different airports in Panama City. An Air Panama connection from PAC requires a road transfer after arrival at PTY. Allow for immigration, baggage collection, city traffic and the domestic check-in deadline. Check the departure airport printed on your ticket.
How often does Air Panama fly from Albrook to David?
Roughly twice daily is a useful planning guide, but the number of departures varies by day. The short flight is often described as 45–55 minutes; Air Panama’s published timetable includes both 45-minute and one-hour timings. Confirm the schedule, airport, baggage allowance and check-in deadline for your travel date with Air Panama.
Where is the Boca Chica turnoff on the Pan-American Highway?
Look for the twin communication towers and Super Centro Isabel at the junction for Horconcitos and Boca Chica. The shop is on the right when approaching westbound from Panama City; that description does not apply to the opposite approach from David. After leaving the highway, go about 4.6 km to Horconcitos, take the centre route at the three-way split, and turn left at the T intersection about 0.5 km later. Continue about 9.5 km toward Boca Chica village, keeping to the village route at the final fork.
Which road do I take at the three-way Y in Horconcitos?
Take the centre route. The junction can initially look like an ordinary Y, with the third road only becoming obvious as you approach. Slow down to identify all three branches. About 0.5 km after choosing the centre route, turn left at the T intersection.
Can you get to Boca Chica by public bus?
Yes. Local buses, often called chicken buses, and minibuses can form a lower-cost route, but several changes and waits make it much slower than driving. Ask at David’s bus terminal for the current connection via the Horconcitos junction and confirm the last onward service into Boca Chica. If that connection has finished, you will need independently arranged onward transport or an overnight stop.
Are there ATMs in Boca Chica?
There are no ATMs in Boca Chica. Withdraw cash in David before travelling to the village. Bring small notes and enough for transport, meals and independently booked outings; confirm which payments can be made by card in advance.
Do you need an SUV to reach Boca Chica?
An SUV is a wise choice if your trip continues into the highlands or uses rough rural access roads. The main route to Boca Chica does not by itself make a four-wheel-drive rental essential. Ask about current road conditions and the access to each place you plan to stay or visit, especially after heavy rain.
Do you need a boat to reach BREEZE Hostal?
No. Boca Chica village and BREEZE are on the mainland. Get the hostal’s exact arrival pin and arrival instructions on WhatsApp before setting out. Boats are for onward island visits, arranged with independent providers. BREEZE is a small budget hostal with no restaurant, pool or spa, and runs no boats or tours.
How far are Boquete and Los Cangilones de Gualaca from Boca Chica?
Boquete is approximately 103–109 km away, or 2–2.5 hours each way by car. Los Cangilones de Gualaca is roughly 80 km away, or 1.5 hours each way. David is about 65 km away, or 1–1.5 hours. These are road-planning estimates, not public-bus journey times.
